Hello,
iām karena.
I come to my clinical practice as I come to my life - grounded & warm, engaged & deliberate. I believe in truth-telling, radical love, and freedom.
My personal life and clinical practice are framed and deeply informed by healing justice, restorative & transformative justice & restorative practice. My clinical experience spans two+ decades, varied clinical settings, and has intentionally prioritized communities of color. I have been in private practice since 2008 and currently work with adults & couples.
My own story has given - and continues to give - me many opportunities to explore & commit to my own healing. During an especially challenging period, I was supported by a beloved & life-saving psychotherapist, and I am forever grateful to her - not only for her skillful care, but also for guiding me toward becoming a MFT. Additionally, my years of facilitating prison-based restorative practices and survivor-centered processes have made an indelible mark on how I practice, parent & live. In addition to my private practice, I am the Co-Founding Director of STRONGHOLD, a collective working at the intersection of racial justice & restorative justice to co-create accountable communities of belonging.
I received my M.A. in Integral Counseling Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS). I also hold a B.A. from The Evergreen State College with an emphasis in Psychology, French & Francophone Cultures, and photography. I grew-up in San Francisco & Holland and am fortunate to consider many places - and people - home. I currently live in Berkeley, CA.
I love all things food, learning from horses, and envision the future on a
sun-drenched compound with my beloveds.
